September 6 Gathering Ground Report

GATHERING GROUND REPORT - SEPTEMBER 6, 2023

From Jerry: "Here is an old pic.  I forgot to break out my camera so Bill and Norm are here and a bonus of Dave and Jo!" (Photo dated July 2023 - the participants haven't really changed much since then)

Chet's van is usually parked in the same spot in the Gathering Ground restaurant parking lot, it was not there and it was not in any other location within eyeshot.

Norm, Bill and Jerry this month enjoyed a breakfast and many stories of the old days. Some were fun and some were not so, but all good memories.

JoAnn did send a note that she was not feeling up to par and will not join the breakfast crew this month.  Rainy day, good day to miss.

We talked a little about taking a cruise, which seems like a popular item on most people's retirement list.   Bill suggested a Cruise Line that his brother has taken and really enjoyed it.   It was a smaller ship with stops in places that the big ships are not able to harbor and his brother said his room came with a butler.   All rooms come with a butler and all rooms are 3 or 4 times more expensive than any other Cruise line advertising in the market.  We all decided to pass and just catch the stories about this Cruise line vicariously through Bill in his stories about his brother..

Bill and Norm both possess memories of the early days of the 1401 computer where AutoCode language was the norm for programming.   Both shared quips from the past, Norm from his very early days at HSD and BIll from his early days at IBM in Manhattan where his dad got him into the door as a kid at the IBM quarters in downtown NY and he was able to write code in the early 1401's.   HERE is an article about Autocode

Bill and Jerry had just made a trip to Tim's place in New Hampshire.   He is in the throes of installing some solar panels on his property and taking advantage of the new law that gives a very healthy rebate for green energy pursuits.

Tim's two apple trees had more apples than any other two trees I have seen, even in a commercial apple orchard.   We were encouraged to take a few pecks back to Ct, and we happily did so.

Bill asked for me to follow him home as the battery light in his car went on as he was motoring to breakfast.   He did make it all of the way back to Windsor with no issues but the red warning light was still on so more to come as to "what was the problem"..
